I have 3-4 hilly acres around the farm that have to be finish mowed, 'cause the wife thinks that the 1010 with the bush hog doesn't cut it plus the ag tires make too much of a mess by the flower beds. Besides which, I have vines, fruit trees, veggie gardens, etc., to get around. Been using a Troybuilt walk behind but I am fed up with that old bear, it is a real PITA!

I put a message out on the Farmall board to ask about using a Cub with a Woods mower. (I know, I KNOW! - a traitor to the sacred Green...) The upshot after much input was that the Cub was too small but maybe a "B" or "A" might do. Then I got to thinking.....

Why not have a small John Deere do the job? I had gone to the Cub idea 'cause I thought that the Deeres would all be way too heavy. I have always wanted a johnny popper to go with the 1010 so what do the experts think? Really would prefer to rescue a veteran than go out and put down cash for one of the newer lawn and garden ones...

So, is a JD B too heavy? An H? Don't really like the L all that much, but I guess it is the equivalent of the Farmall Cub.

If I could get some informed opinions, I would sure like to keep with the green team.

Thanks for helping me and my blown out knees!

Jerry

Hi Jerry, You might be interested in a set-up like this. An "M" or a "40" are reasonably-priced tractors to buy and maintain,as well as being a classics, and "tractor buddies.com" has the set-ups to make it like this. Note the turf tires. The address has a lot more similar photos, just right click on the image for image info, and knock off the "---.jpg"
Hope this helps, RonMC

I have a couple of acres to mow too, with fruit trees, a garden, etc. I use a JD 40W with a King Kutter 5' finish mower hooked up to the 3pt. It works for me, but I don't care if the yard gets ripped up with the ag tires.

It would seem to me that a JD B would be a little big and cumbersome for 3 ac. A little Ford NAA or 600 with a rear mount mower would probably do a good job, just not as nimble as a belly mower setup, plus would cost significantly more because everyone wants them. I didn't suggest an 8N because the lack of live hydraulics is a huge drawback but lots of folks like them. Your best bet for a good size and price may be a little Allis B. They've got more power than a Cub, work well with a belly mower setup, are smaller than a JD B and seem to be reasonably priced.
