I bought a restored '36 A. I've fugured out the best way to get mine started what I consider easily - in about 6 or 8 flywheel turns. I ordered a repro manual, and adjusted the load and idle settings to where I think they should be. At full throttle, the engine runs smooth, with no flame through the exhaust. However, when I back the throttle to a lower rpm, every second or third "pop" has flame out the exhaust anywhere from 1 to 5 inches. Is this normal, or is there something else I should be looking at?

Doug, the reason it is shooting flames out the exhaust is it is firing on an open exhaust valve or there is a combustible mixture in the exhaust system. The question is why? Try different carb idle settings to see if that helps, then check the exhaust system for leaks, (if air can get in during over-run it will pop through the exhaust)..Then check the ignition timing (if it is firing late it will pop through the exhaust).. Then check the compression on a hot engine, if it has a leaking exhaust valve it will pop through the exhaust. You didn't say if it had a muffler on it, but if it doesn't sometimes they will pop through the exhaust when the throttle setting is lowered.

There is no muffler. What do you mean by over-run? I know there is an exhaust connection directly behind the load needle area that is loose, because while I was setting idle and load, I could see flame at that joint. I'll tighten that one and check them all. I have had the mag off a couple times, so timing could be a little off. I'll run through timing again.
Thanks for your advice.

Doug, sorry about the "over-run", that is an auto term that is used to explain when an engine is coasting or the throttle is pulled back & the engine still running faster than the throttle setting says it should. Tighten or repair that exhaust leak as that could be all that is wrong with it.
