How is the best way to get 100% fuel shut off on a tractors brass sediment bulb assembly. It is either on or off with a 1/4 turn of the knob. Over winter it still leaked some and filled the cyclinders of gas. Some one had repacked it with teflon string. Would graphite coated string work better? If I can not shut the fuel off completely, I plan to step off of originality and go to aftermarket items.

Every quarter turn type sediment bowl valve I ever saw just slowed the fuel down to an acceptable leak rate so you could service the sediment bowl. The packing is to keep the fuel from leaking past the valve stem! I've had best luck with genuine old graphited packing rope. More packing and tightening it more just makes the valve harder to turn. It will still fill the carb but will do so very slowly. I'd repair the float valve.

I bought a packing gasket from JD for my B shut-off valve.

I have the same problem on my H. The brass valve has become gouged over the last 60 years and won't completely seal.

It doesn't answer your question, but I just siphon all the gas out of the tank when I want to store it. I usually only use the 1 gallon tank anyway making this easy.
