The pto nor the hydraulic lift arms work on my 70 diesel. Before I dig in any deeper mechanically does anyone know a common factor that would not let them work? All handles work fine. All fluid levels are full.

You need to buy an operator's manual. You will need it eventually. The manuals are still available from Deere and not all that expensive considering the wealth of info they contain. Also available and quite useful are the service manuals and the parts books. I have all of these for my 50 and refer to them everytime I work on it even though I grew up on a farm and have been around tractors all my life.

I should add, do you know if you have live or non-live PTO? That makes a difference on what you have to do to get the PTO running. Also the hydraulic pump for the lift arms is engaged by a small lever near the lower left of the instrument panel. That lever needs to rotated 180 degrees to engage the pump and MUST be done with the engine not running.

Ummmm, if this is a diesel, isn't the pump located underneath the belly, kind of where a gas starter would have been located ? But the pump still must be engaged with engine off. PTO lever can't be engaged without engine off, too. If the rockshaft won't raise, it could be that the upper Pow-r-trol plug (where the original remote cylinder would have gone) has it's diverter screw set for the breakaway cylinder fitting and not the rockshaft, but by all means, buy the books. Just got my set from JD Press for under $ 75.00.

I'll bet you're absolutely right, Frank. I'm thinking of the gas models, sorry.

Hi Bill, there is a shut off for each. Make sure the hydraulic pump, and the constant drive for the PTO are turned on.
