Have found a completely restored including engine rebuild 1953 Model 40. The restoration job is excellent and the tractor is in mint condition. I currently have a 1956 Fordson Diesel and a Model 300 Commercial John Deere but am not certain of a good price to offer for the Model 40. Would appreciate any suggestions and comments about this particular tractor. Do not need another tractor but have an understanding wife! Thanks for any help. Joe D

If everything works right, maybee, but there are a lot of things still that may not be correcteed. After working on one a lot of hours , you still may see some things that are not quite perfect.

Joe,

After you look at the restoration photographs and look through the receipts for new and replacement parts, you have to decide if you want the tractor. If you do, you pay what it takes to get it. That will probably be a little less than the asking price but not a lot. If the restoration was well done, he probably has a lot of money and time in the tractor. I don't know of anyone that makes money on restorations.

If not, you let it go. It might not be the right one for you.

Steve

I have some reference ads that you can look at that might give you some frame of reference as to what people are asking for these.

Another issue that will affect price is the Model 40 style - tricycle, standard, or crawler. Also, for a 1953 model, the lower the serial number (how close to 60001?), the closer it is to being one of the first built. This probably only makes a difference for the first 50 to 100 built, however.

I saw a beautifully restored 40T get auctioned this spring for somewhere between $3500 and $4000 (can't remember exactly, but could look it up later if needed), and at that I thought it was a good price.

Todd, thanks for the reply. Great info and great site. This gentleman is asking $4,500 which I believe is a bit high. It is a beautifully restored tractor so it looks like negotiation time. Again, thanks for your help. JoeD

For the tractor alone, I think a fair price would be the range of $2,000 to $2,500. That may a bit low depending in the area of the country you are in. I just bought one in good condition for $2,000 with cultivators, and a lot more tools. Make him a ricuculously low offer and see what he says. If it fits your budget just remember the old axiom, 'you don't steal slow'.

Thanks for the comments and info. I will start negotiations today. The asking is $4,500 for a beautifully totally restored tractor. I feel this is still too high and will make a more reasonable offer.

What's the guy asking? If all he wants is an
offer he's just looking for a sucker.

You might see by previous postings that he is asking $4,500. Judging by all of the comments and research I have done so far that appears to be too high for this particular tractor. I am looking at others but will still negotiate on this one. Will go today to look at restoration history including photos. This tractor is a serious restoration job which I admire and am just foolish enough to pay a little extra for the love and detail that goes into a good restoration.
Thanks for your input. JoeD
