I was at the local JD dealership today and the counter man told me a 630 High Crop tractor sold for over a hundred thousand dollars at the Moline Ill. sale this weekend. Has anyone on this board heard of this. If this is true I wish my 630 rowcrops were a foot and a half higher. Jim M.

I was at the sale. The 630 HI CROP sold for $141,000 and was a gas tractor. It was owned by a guy from California(he got it in Texas and restored it), and was purchased by a collector from Minnesota.
HI CROPS had a big day at this sale. A nicely restored 64 3020 HI CROP also sold for $30,000.

In regards to the post and the one below, I might be mistaken, but I thought it was a diesel. Regardless, they said there were only 10 made, and only 4 were known to still exist in complete form. They also knew that one of the 10 was in a salvage yard and beyond repair without another parts tractor of the same model. Funny thing about the one sold, in the restoration picture board, there was another sitting right beside it. Seems the guy, who Polk said would "shed a tear at parting with the tractor", has the other one ready for restoration soon. I think the only "tear he shed" was one of joy at how much the other one would bring. This one did have a factory three point. And yes, the final sale price was $141,000! From the tale I heard of the buyer, this one completed his colection of one of every high crop in both diesel and gas 2 cylinder versions. Don't know if that is more than a tale though.

I'm not sure what the old boy has in his collection but during the auction Ben Polk mentioned several times that "he,(the buyer), had one of the best Deere collections in the world". Coming from Polk, I believe that that about says it all.
The tractor is a gas model.
Intrerestingly enough, the guy that ran the auction for Deere used to work for them strictly as a contract restorationist. He now is on the payroll as a regular Deere employee and is going to be in charge of the new tourist attraction which is a "1958 Deere Dealership". The thing is going to operated just as a dealership worked in 1958. There will be displays of "current"(up to 1958 that is) machinery and other, changing special attractions, a parts counter where that era parts will be available, and according to what he told me yesterday, there are plans to sell some of the restored tractors off the "used lot". All in all it sounds to be a great idea and I'm sure that as with everything else that Deere does-it will be excellent.
Anyway, this guy owns a 620 gas HI CROP. He has it on display down at the shop-BTW, the collectors center is now called THE MOLINE TRACTOR COMPANY-and it is even more rare than the 630 which was auctioned last weekend, I guess that they only made 4 of 620's. He has NO intention of selling it and plans to keep it at the Deere facility. If you get a chance to see this place when it's completed-May 2001 is the projected opening date-I'll bet that you'd enjoy the bejeezus out of it.

Live in Geneseo and plan to keep close tabs on the place. My sons were very interested in the place, auction, and the tractors (especially those in the back room). They really liked the cutaway versions of the 60 and the other (I'm not sure what it was). The fact that it is gas is probably what made it so rare, mostly diesels I would assume. I wasn't really sure if Jeff was on the Deere payroll or that of the two cylinder club. Do they have any involvement in this? It didn't seem so. Will be interesting to see what models they work on. My common 'ol 35 B will probably not qualify anyway, even though I would rather do it myself. One thing I seem to notice at every show, the paint job is most likely far better than anything that came out of Waterloo for that time period.

Geneseo huh, I'm just outside Coal Valley, right next to the Deere experimental farm.
I think that the other cut-away tractor was a G but I'm not certain-too much other stuff in that back room to be looking at divided tractors.
Jeff really does some good stuff. A couple of weeks ago showed me a picture of a G that had literally burned to the ground. I looked at it and was amazed when he told me that the picture was of a tractor that I was standing next to. It looked like it was brand new-as you said-probably better than it looked when it left Waterloo. I got rid of a restored 520 and a 2010R at that auction. I got my money back, but I'm afraid that Mr. Polk got most of the profit that I was looking for. Such is life.
Now, after a discussion with misters Polk and McManus, I find that what I should be looking for is an Oliver 550?? And you think that that 630 HI CROP was rare...

OK, give me the e-mail address, mine is wind63@netexpress.net. How bad do you want a 550? I happen to know of one in Wisconsin. I don't know if he would part with it, still uses it to mow, clear brush and do general chores around his Grandpa's farm. If you are really interested, I could ask. I knew the guy who sold the 520 all fuel they pulled in and the H tricycle that sold early. He was somewhat pleased as he thought he would only get about 3500 out of the 520 and 2000 out of the H. So what he lost on the H he more than made up on the 520. Drop me a line and we can chat more.

The fellow mentioned is Jeff McManus of Illinois City, Illinois. I have corresponded with him concerning restoration questions.

A guy on another site said he was there and that the 630 brought $141,000. He said the guy that bought it already had one and they only made 10 of them.

Holy Cow!!!

Must have been a power fuel, or LP! I'm guessing power fuel.

Can someone further explain "power fuel"? Is that the same as what is commonly called "all fuel"? Thanks

Hmm, just noticed a post a bit farther down the board here "Auction in Moline" that said this tractor was a diesel. Never heard that referred to as "power fuel" before.

DP the sale ad is in the July Aug. 2 cyl mag. Dennis Polk auction. I'll see if there any of those spec's in the ad.

There is a chart in one of the old Green Magazines that tells how many of each were built. Seems like the power fuel high crops were the rare bird! If you don't find it, I will check into it from this end. Probably a good thing the row crop gas tractors arn't worth that much. I might have to part with a family tractor!

Ain't that always the way, close but no cigar. I've got three row crops. It might be a though decision, but I think I'd let all three go for for that. Dream on 320U.
