I just purchased a JD-40S. What type and weight of motor oil is recommended for this tractor. I know 10w or 20w was the original spec., but don't know where to find such. Would a 10w-30 or straight 30w be better?

I've always used straight 30 in mine and it runs great.

I have an "H" that I have used for over 27 years. I overhauled it in 1974 and it's had nothing but Quaker State 10W40 oil in it since. It wasn't babied most of those years and was the only tractor I had for a while. In 1999 I restored it and checked the engine for wear. I found less than .0005 wear on the rod bearings, and no measurable wear on the crankshaft. The cylinder bores had less than .001 of taper in them. I think the multi-grade oils are OK based on my experience. Frequent oil changes and regular maintenance are equally important. Just my opinion, Paul

Joe, it depends on how much wear is on the engine & what you want to use the tractor for. If all you are going to use it for is parades, play & light work use a good quality 10W30 or 10W40 or even a 15W40 oil. If you are going to work it hard (pulling on the governor at wide open throttle or plowing) then use a good quality 30W, or if much wear on engine 40W. A diesel rated oil will give you a little better protection under load but has more sulfur in it & tends to make more sulfuric acid so don't use it if the tractor is just used a little then sits a lot.

Thanks for your input. I had just changed the oil and used 30w but was having second thoughts. I don't really know how much wear is on the engine but it seems to run pretty good. I will be doing some plowing and loading it pretty good, just not that often. I feel a little better about my choice now.
