I didn't know they called a tractor a John Deere until 1924 with the D series. But E-Bay (item # 438150557) has one called the world's rarest tractor!! Look at it and bid! Note: minimum bid is $900,000. I'm out of this one.

Joe Dain was on the Deere Board of Directors when given the task of designing and building a tractor for Deere. Young determined and brilliant, he succeeded in overseeing 79? (not sure of this number) tractors built, of which 2 are in exhistance today, the other one being a hulk. I believe he died during the influenza epidemic of 1917-1920 at a relatively young age. Had he lived, there was a good chance Deere&Co. may have taken a different avenue in their overall design. Vance

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe it to be a "Dane" named after the engineer that designed the first John Deere tractor, prior to purchase of the Waterloo-boy. Later came the D. I would be interested in hearing if this is not correct. Bob

You are correct about it being called a "Dane". I am not sure about who designed it, but someone posted a web site last week and it had the story of this tractor on it. Somewhere along the line the gentleman who currently owns it had to sue John Deere to make them fess up and admit that it was actually the first John Deere tractor they produced. Now someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think this is how it goes. Bill {Antique Acres}

correct spelling is "Dain" after Joseph Dain, the designer and company owner who Deere bought out. A later JD engineer, Theodore Brown wrote a book about all the tractors Deere either experimented with or had from buyouts prior to designing "their own", that being the "D".

It apparently was a prototype tractor. There is a lot of discussion further down on this board in the last week on this tractor. Bill {Antique Acres}
