Were there different variations of starters for the three years that 630's were produced? I just finished installing a replacement in our 59, and that sucker was a close fit. I finally had to go back to the dealer to make sure the only difference was about an eighth inch of extra length. It looks like the original had the end cap machined down around the armature shaft, while the replacement was a solid casting. I eventually had to grind a little divot in the tractor cavity where the thing sits at, and put about a 45 degree bevel on the starter snout. Otherwise it would not clear the flywheel. The grinding allowed me to swing it all the way up and slide it home. After that, it worked great. The old girl lives to work another day! As an aside to the story, I had to retrieve the old starter from the JD dealer's mechanic's house, since he was working today. He said it was in his tractor shed. I thought cool, I bet he has a few nice ones. When I got there, I found what must have been more than 40 JD's wedged in a shed, with a load of spares. Some were beautifully restored, while others where waiting their turn. There were 620's, 730's, GP's, B's, A's, 530, and plenty others that I couldn't identify. (I'm quite the novice) I definately want to stay in contact with this guy, he might even have some of the parts I need. At least it made what could have been an aggravating unplanned trip to the dealer much more bearable. Sorry for the long email, I just had to tell someone, since that is all I have talked about for the rest of today.
