I am considering buying a 14T baler. I bale about 15 acres twice a year. The seller wants $225. for it and it appears to be in reasonable condition. What I am looking for is input from anyone who has owned one or owns one. Any major issues with this baler? What to look for when buying? Thanks, Dave

Well, I sure can't address the price of the baler you're looking at, but I have had one summer's experience with a 14 T.

Back in about 1955, my uncle bought a new 14-T, but had only a Farmall F-20, so Dad offered to use our '49 JD A to run it with. Since both of them farmed full time and then some, I got the bright idea to start a custom baling business - Uncle provided the baler, Dad provided the tractor, I provided the labor. I was going to make enough money to pay my way through college, right? Wrong!!

My biggest job was about 2 acres for a "gentleman farmer" - consisted of about 120 bales at 11 cents per bale (dropped on the ground because he wouldn't pay 14 cents for loaded on the wagon). I drove about 10 miles to his place, baled his hay, and drove 10 miles home. Total income - 120 bales at 11 cents = $13.20. Split three ways, I got $4.30 - The next summer I got a job at the local locker plant at $1.00 an hour!!!!

I do hope you have as much fun with your baler as I had with ours!! And I'm not being sarcastic - at 18 years old, it was a big adventure, and it taught me a lot about business!!

Stan

Dave, its a little hard to say not seeing it, but the price is good if its any good at all. Roll the flywheel and see how much slop or play is in the big crank throw/plunger bearing and how tight the plunger and knife are in the bale chute. Check to see if the needles have been welded and the knotters shouldnt have too much wear or slop or worn down too bad (sharp looking) gear teeth. Grease her down, grease and sand and wire brush the bill hooks until they are shiny, and try her out with some hay around the barn. If string hangs and stays tight on the bill hooks or breaks, loosen their tension, but if slips off before tying, tighten them. However, I wouldnt do a darn thing until it gets shined up a bit it may be perfect just the way she is and if it only needs a little scouring, you can mess it up by tryong to adjust things before shes shined up so just try it and be patient before u mess with adjustments I think. Ol John T

Agree with all the comments and here is a trick I have to do on my 14T; shoot WD-40 or similar oil all over any pivot and /or shaft on the knotter, especially on start up in the beginning of the year. Don't know if I have too much wear but grease alone won't work. About every 150-200 bales I get down off the tractor and relube everything with grease and WD, works fine. Of course I have to cleas twice as often because the oil holds trash but it keeps her runnin.

Yeah I have even coated the billhooks with grease (when rusty) but I didnt feel comfy telling that to a rookie actually becasue if they are already scoured it may make it slip.

Have one and like it, but they will teach you a new vocabulary!! Research the archieves on this site and you will get a LOT of info on a 14 T. $225 for a working baler is a good price, I paid $250 for one just for parts. After bought it found out that it may be a better baler than the one I am running (paid $750 for it!!). Good luck.
