Got my H so it would start several months ago but still have not rigged a pulley for a generator. It does not have one now and it appears to have never had one so I have been jump starting it from a 12 volt battery.
Have been hooking pos bat. terminal to starter switch and neg. terminal to a ground. Today I accidentally got them reversed and was really surprised. The battery was only partly charged but it spun the starter like never before. I would appreciate any input from you folks. Will I damage the starter etc. Thanks and God Bless JM

Joe, that tractor was originally wired positive ground [positive battery post to ground & negative battery post to the starter].. So what you did shouldn't hurt it in any way....

~I'm not sure why it cranked better with the wires reversed [it shouldn't have]..

~Maybe it has more to do with better cable connections when you hooked it up positive ground..

~In any case the tractor should eventually be wired positive ground so it should crank good for you.

~Those starters have a wire wound field so the field polarity changes along with the armature polarity when the battery cables are reversed so the starter will ALWAYS operate in the correct direction with about the same power..

~When you finally get the generator spinning by adding a pulley & belt, make sure you polarize the generator by making sure you have a fully charged battery installed & hooked up, then ground the generator's [F] post [smaller of the two] , then jumping battery power form the powered cut-out relays [BAT] terminal to the generator's [A] post [larger of the two]..You should see a spark, if so the generator is then polarized [you must polarize to be sure the generator's output matches the battery's ground polarity]...
