I do not get any spark when I crank the pony motor am I right to assume the coils are bad?

If you need new coils you can get them from Bill Lopoulos magneto parts at (www.magnetoparts.com)for about 1/2 what you can at John Deer. I got some for my 720. I got new points coils and wires they work great.

Before replacing coils check for six volts while cranking the pony and three volts to the coils while running . Check the points are making & breaking the circuit and not stuck "up".

I second that...there is (at least on my 70D) a connection from the pony ballast resistor (on the back of the ignition switch) at the starter switch, which applies the full battery voltage to the coils while cranking the pony.

Also, I got pony coils at Central Tractor for $84.99 a pair. Many other places advertise them in 2-Cylinder and others, usually 100-125 a pair.
Didn't even try at the dealer :)
