Hi, Im doing a 'restoration'of a JD 2010D. Iv'e just started painting the major engine components - still dissassembled. What I want to know is this: The exhaust manifold is a yukky rust color, is it traditional to paint them black (with high temp paint) in a full restore, or to leave em 'rust' colored?

Any advice appreciated, Thanks, Jim from Australia.

Jim, unless you get ALL the rust out of the casting pores or kill the rust that is in the pores it won't make any difference after a good hard hot run & a damp night. If you want it to stay black without repainting it continually you should send it out to be porcelainized (sp?) I have seen a couple of tractor manifolds done that way & they look fantastic & hold up real well. Show car people have been doing that for years.

Jim, A Perfectionist Correct Policeman might say (On the older ones) they were painted green at factory then rust if you wanna be absolutely original, but I say heck with them. We paint ours flat black with the Eastman High Temp paint and we like it and if others dont they can kiss our grits. I plan to use a few more more stainless steel unpainted bolts when I re paint my B, and even if not original, I think it looks neat as heck. One mans opinion. John T

John, I agree with your attitude!

Eastman Hi Temp gray is what I used after wirebrushing and it didn't last worth a hoot. Maybe I didn't get the manifold clean enough.

We'll see if the fancy chemical rust converter helps. I'll get back to you in a year or two.

Our painter Paul used Eastman high temp black and it seems like its gonna last a good while. However, he used some Eastman aluminum color which burned right off??? John T

This won't answer the "what is the tradition" question, but a related comment: Just painting the manifold won't work. I tried using Rust Converter from Rustoleum, after wirebrushing, then used hi temp paint, and like what I see so far. (Hi temp gray on my JD-H). Trouble is, you don't know how well you did for a year or so. I have seen when I just wirebrushed followed by hi temp paint, it didn't last six months before I had a rusty manifold again.
