Hi All,

I have a JD 3-pt hitch to install on a '48 JD A, but there is a slight problem with the top link. The tractor end of the link is a large diameter (1.25-1.5" I would guess) left-hand threaded shaft with a coupling on the end, and the threaded shaft portion is bent perhaps 20-25 degress from straight (ouch!). Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on either how I might straighten this, or where to turn to try to find a replacement for this piece. Any idea on approximate costs?

Thanks!

John

Thanks for the feedback, gents. I'll try a welding shop first, see if they can heat and bend it. I saw new top links at the farm store yesterday for about $25, but it would be a lot nicer to have the original...

John, not being able to actually see the bent link makes it hard to give exact advice on how to straighten it. I have had good luck straightening similar bent large diameter rods & links by placing the bent item on 2 hardwood blocks spaced just far enough apart to put the bend between them, then I put a hardwood block in the middle of the bend on top, then I place a bottle jack on the center block, then I put the biggest tractor I own over the set-up & try to jack the tractor up until the link straightens (you might have to turn the link a couple of times & re-jack)

Take it to a welding shop. It should be fairly easy to straighten after heating. He may have to re-run the threads.

Replacement top links are available at most farm and tractor supply stores, price range typically is under $20. You might have to look a little harder to get a unusual length, but atandard lengths are readily available - they apparently get bent up often!
