We have a Stover Type CT3 #205735 powering a vertical wood splitter, it stopped while running and now has no spark. I have cleaned it and verified all the electrical connections, tested the condenser checked for internal shorts and it all seems OK. Does anyone have setup information as to pull down distance/point gap setting and or other important items. I am running on the seat of my pants and its getting thin. Winter is coming and I have lots of wood to split. J Owens, VT

I do not know which particular mag you have, but if the points are set at around 0.015 and the condensor is okay and the coil is good, she ought to at least fire. You can continuity check the coil, but even if thats good, it can still be breaking down at high voltage. The condensor should show an open circuit on a battery type ohm meter once its charged. If the cap and wires are good, I usually suspect points first then condensor then the coil. Does the mag have a impulse spring trip and is it snapping over?? Because if not, she wont fire at slow hand crank speeds. John T

Hello John T
Thanks for the quick reply. The "mouse trap" name is mine . It is actually a type EK. I have checked the primary and secondary windings for continuity and they are fine, and the condenser looks open but charges when a DC voltage is applied, as you would expect. The impulse trip does snap at the correct time ( about 10 to 15 degrees Before top Dead Center. It is difficult to measure the gap when the trip releases. I gripped the corner of a dollar bill between the points while rolling it over and it seems to just barely release it as it trips. Still no spark. the insulator holding the 6" long plug wire looks clean with no carbon tracks but who knows. Do youknow where I might get this Mag serviced?

Im not sure where to get it serviced, you may try the Links both here and www.johnnypopper.com. When the points are in the open position try setting that gap a bit wider to like 0.015 or so. I kind of suspect the coil may be breaking down at high voltage which is common even though it would still show a good continuity test. Good Luck John T
