JD Model 70 Fuel Problem

Just acquired a 1954 JD 70 gas with a problem...runs on one cylinder only. Changed spark plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor and now get good spark from both plugs but still only one cylinder running. Remove the left spark plug wire and no change in engine performance. With left wire installed removing right wire kills the engine. Pulling the choke seems to allow the left cylinder to run. Compression good in both cylinders. Any suggestions for troubleshooting the Duplex carb., which has not been overhauled in recent years to my knowledge. Would appreciate any and all positive comments. Thanks

Have you swapped out the plugs, or at least swapped them left to right? Remember when I was a young guy with my first car, the auto dealer had a "spark plug tester" where the plug was tested with an actual spark and increasing air pressure to see where sparking actually failed. Could be your plugs are failing under load. See good advice below regarding carb, too!

Carburetor either needs to be adjusted and/or cleaned and/or rebuilt. These carbs have to be "just right" to make the 70 run right. We spent a lot of time chasing our behinds with our 70 until we just pulled the carb back off the tractor (after it had just been rebuilt), gave it another thorough cleaning and then readjusted the settings. Used a Baker Fan at the county fair to get it pretty well dialed in. Just keep playing with it and make sure it's "squeaky clean."

after running it, check the left (I'm assuming you mean the flywheel side) plug and see if it's wet. If it is not wet, it means you probably need to adjust the needle valve on the left (flywheel) side of the carburator. Close it all the way (counting the turns as you close it), and open it about 1.5 to 2 turns. It should run, and if it doesn't, keep opening it. If it won't run after about four turns, my experience would say that the carb needs a good cleaning or a rebuild. If the spark plug is wet, you've still got electrical problems. It is possible for it to appear to spark good outside, but not enough when it's in compression. Hope that helps a bit.
