1010 PTO Extension?

My JD 1010 has a sort of extension PTO shaft that bolts on to the end of where the PTOs shafts come out and has two male shafts. One shaft goes into the tractor PTO gear box and the other for connecting implements to. This extension housing is about 12 inches long and has bearings on each end but no way that I can tell to grease them. And I am not clear what this does. It looks like to me that you could just take the shaft out of this "extension housing" and insert it directly into the PTO gear box. Neither the parts or repair manual show this thing. Mine is a 1960/61 utility and has both 540/100 rpm speeds. Anybody else have this thing and any advice on lubing it? It absolutely does not have a grease fitting on it.
