I'm rebuilding my father's tractor, and somewhere along the line the generator was taken off. I bought a generator and voltage regulator, but don't know how to hook it up. First, and simplest, is the ground on this tractor positive or negative? Second, there are two post terminals on the generator, and the markings are not readable. Is there is a way to tell how to hook it up to the voltage regulator, and then on to the amp meter and light switch? Also, does anyone know if this is a "three brush" or "two brush" generator.

(1) It came from the factory as + ground. (2) Often, the armature terminal on the generator is larger than the field terminal (carries more current). If you have to look inside, you can see which lead goes through both the field coils and then comes out the field terminal, while the arm terminal (which is also connected to the opposite end field winding opposite the field terminal) leads to a brush, goes through the armature, and out the other brush to frame. (3) VR Wiring: The Arm or Gen on the VR goes to the generators Armature terminal, the Field on VR to the generators Field terminal, and Battery gets to the battery, usually via and through an ammeter if you have one. All loads like lights, ignition, etc., and the Bat lead from the VR goes on the ammeter + side, while the only lead on the ammeter - gets to the battery - , usually at the starter connection. Some VR's have a load or lights terminal instead of wiring them to the ammeter. It may be a 2 or 3 brush which is easy to tell by loking at the generator. This assumes you have a VR and not a simple cutout relay on the Generator. Old John T
