I've got a 40 H, & I need to remove the hood to get to the gas tank. I'm new to this, haven't removed any parts yet. It appears that either the front of the tank is supported by the hood or the hood is supported by the tank (chicken or egg?) But the big question, the steering shaft. Do I remove both ends of the shaft, then lift the hood/shaft assembly up & over the exhaust pipe?

I just did this for the first time on my '44 H..it wasn't too bad. As instructed already, pull the steering wheel off and remove the steering shaft by rotating it forward out of the from gear. I removed the fuel line and 3-way valve actuating rod and unbolted the fuel tank support bolts (2) at the bottom against the block. Then you can lift the hood up (easier with 2 people) and over the muffler with the fuel tank still attached to the hood. Once you have the hood off you can get to the upper two fuel tank strap bolts very easily. Just be careful not to break the strainer bowl. You also need to remove the front medallion and I removed the front grilles (there are 3 philips head screws into the side of the steering pedestal. Hope this helps.

Yes Phil, the steering shaft has to be removed before the fuel tank can be extracted. Pull the wheel and slide the shaft forward. Next unbolt the strap hangers at the front of the tank, then the saddle bolts at the rear.

Dick, thx for the info. To slide the shaft forward do I disassemble the steering box, then slide the shaft & gear up & forward or do I remove the gear from the shaft?

pull the front cap on steering box and the shaft will rotate out. Be careful there is a small bearing that will drop whhen you pull cap if don't watch it.
