Hello Experts!
I just bought a 1944 JD A that wasn't charging. I had the generator rebuilt and was told that the original regulator was bad. I bought a new one from oldjd4u.com, what was advertised as a direct replacement but the new regulator has four terminals and the original has only two. My setup has the three position switch and the Field pole of the generator was connected to the resistor terminal of the light switch for ground. I am unsure of the setup for this new regulator. Has anyone run into this before? Thanks, Tom.

Tom, it sounds like your old setup had just a cut out relay (instead of a full fledged 3 or 4 terminal Voltage Regulator) and they regulate the generators output via different field winding resistances to ground in the light switch. (Low charge when lights off and high charge when lights on) The new 4 terminal is designed to regulate the fields resistance to ground internally (not use the light switch) and the extra L terminal is what feeds the light switch and lights. You can use the new one by connecting its Bat or Arm terminal to the Generators Armature output lead, the Fld VR terminal to the Fld lead on the generator, the Bat terminal on the VR to get to and charge the battery (often via an ammeter then to the starter) and the L feeds the light switch, but it has to just turn the lights on, not connect that to ground or resistors to ground. If you dont wanna do that and keep it original, then you have to buy and wire a 2 terminal cutout relay between the generators Arm outout lead and the lead that goes to the battery and leave the light switch ground to regulate the generator. Post back and let us know how you wanna proceed and you need to polarize the new VR once its all connected. Ol John T

If the L pole on the VR is feeding the light switch, will the lights be able to be used when the tractor is not running? Currently the light switch is fed by the lead off of the cut-out switch when running, and through the ammeter to battery when not running. This also allows a reading of discharge to register on the ammeter. I would like to keep the same functionality. Is this possible? I was thinking of just leaving the L terminal unused and feeding the lights with the Bat terminal. Not quite sure what to do. Thanks, Tom.

Yes they'll still light with the tractor off. The advantage of using the L terminal to feed the lights is that when the lights are on the current they use in effect kicks the charging system into high gear. If you don't use the L terminal to feed the lights, you will likely show a discharge unless you have the engine running very nearly full throttle whenever the lights are on. Example.... On my '51 B, the previous owner bypassed and did not use the L terminal. With lights on, it discharged unless running full speed. Now that I'm using the L terminal to feed the lights, it doesn't discharge until the throttle handle is less than an inch from dead idle.

Thanks for the info. I would like to keep the A original, but, since it will be a working tractor it would probably be a better idea to upgrade the charging system. Is there an easy way to retro-fit the existing switch/wiring system to the new four pole voltage regulator? Thanks, Tom.

hooking the bat terminal of the vr to the arm term of the gen is wrong and will run the bat down. what is in a vr that needs to be polarized only gen needs be polorized.

O00000 ops I meant Gen or Arm terminal NOT Bat. to the Generators Armature lead. Ive answered that question so many times I try and do it without proof reading. However, you do need to polarize it AFTER the new VR is connected as I said. The polarization directions always come with a new VR. Good Luck
