Those are clutch head screws and were not supposed to be on a 48 model B. They are supposed to be Philliips screws on the hood and grilles . He can get a clutch head driver from Deere.

Tractorboy,

When did the clutch head screws first appear? I have heard that there were two different sizes of the heads, but I don't know for sure.

I have a clutch head screwdriver that came with our '49 A (built 5/31/49), but don't know which size it is if there is a difference.

I am not sure when the first clutch head bolt appeared but I am fairly sure that they are all the same size (clutch insert). These clutch head bolts are as confusing as decals size/placement. A 48B takes the round head with a philips center while a 48 A takes the machine bolt with the clutch center. My 49 G takes a round head with a clutch head center. There is a gentleman who sells bolt kits for your type of tractor located in W. PA. If you need his number reply to this posting. Snap-On provides two different size clutch head bolts.

Rebecca,
I would imagine he wants a flywheel wrench. John Deere made a special flywheel wrench to tighten the flywheel onto the crankshaft. The same wrench that fits the B will also fit the model H. I have these wrenches for sale if he wants one.

Rebecca; Not sure if he has heard of some wrench that was sold with the B at some time or what. You may want to explore www.shaysnet.com They have lots of info on B's and its also entertaining and informative. Bob

I got some B's too and the only places that give a prob is the Flywheel. I fixed me up a special wrench to tighten it so now I dont have that prob anymore . A good set of 1/2 and 3/4 drive sockets and wrenches should take it all the way down . You will need a good torque wrench capable of pulling 150 ft lbs and that should do it . Thats my 2 cents worth

Rebecca,

I have '48 "B" myself, and I haven't found any basic maintenance that couldn't be done with conventional wrenches, in fact a lot can be done with a 12" adjustable wrench. If he were planning on doing a major engine overhaul I would imagine he would need some specialty tools, but for routine stuff a decent set of sockets and combination wrenches should be more than adequate.
Maybe you could re-post and be more specific about what tasks he thinks the special wrenches are needed for?

Rebecca:
What are the "special wrenches" your father needs to work on his '48 B..?? I have worked on several of these old tractors with off the shelf wrenches without any special ones.. Maybe he could explain a bit better what he needs and we could then help.
