Regarding the recent posts on console 4020's starting in 1969....I was wondering if the 4020 changed any from '69 to '72? And of these model year tractors which year is the most in demand? Now getting away from all these questions I would like to say the 4020 is AWSOME !!!!! !!

Jim, the late 4020's can be broken down into two groups- the '69-'70 models, and the '71-'72 models. An easy way to tell the difference from a distance is to look at the intake manifolds. The late manifold is straight- that is, the intake ports and runner are on an even plane. The earlier one is like the early 4020's in that the runner is below the ports. The '69-'70 models used a CB injection pump that was trouble, and many were switched back to a DB pump which all the rest of the 4020's had. The CB pump is noticeably shorter than the DB or JDB pump is. Their were differences in the electrical systems of these two groups. There is a prominent serial number break at 250,001 and up, which is the '71 model year. The later ones have a dimmer switch and an indicator light in the dash, along with single headlights instead of dual (unless more have been added. There are other differences, but these are the noticeable ones. I have a '71 4020, and love it. Hope this helps. Mike

Love 4020's, but have never owned one. My question is; Did they all have the console, or was that optional? I think I have seen later models with the shifter and hydraulics still on the dash, but now question that.

Wind, All later 4020's 1969 and newer had the right hand console which had your SCV levers and your three point control levers in it. The last year the hydraulic control levers were in the dash was 1968. Dave W.

Mike, You hit on most of the differences and are correct. There is one more that you missed and a very distinct one and that is the two different engine blocks. I don't know where the break was in the late tractors serial numbers but the earlier one had the smooth blank ear on the left side of the block where the ventilator pump used to be located. This block different than the later block was the poorer one of the two due to it lacked one oring in it to seal the cylinder liners in the block and was prone to leak antifreeze down in the crankcase. The later block did not have the large ear on the side rather it had two small ears for an AC compressor mounting. It had two o-rings and one packing ring that sealed the liners in the block verses the one oring and one packing like the earlier one had. The later block also had the hole in the side of it to install the block heater right in the water jacket where it belonged. I am sure you know all this Mike as I can tell you are no stranger to the 4020,s either . I just thought I would point it out to the rest. Dave W.
