A friend of mine is looking at a 2010 with a loader. The seller wants $4500. Is it worth that much and are there any horror stories about the 2010? Thanks.

Having put a lot of effort into restoring a 2010 diesel engine (on a mid 64' model) - I think that its worst problems are that (1).. You cant really buy any 3rd party parts for the engine, and the JD parts are very expensive. (2).. Idosyncratic design, often you look at the design decisions that have been made in the engine and you just have to ask WHY? Even so, I think its a neat tractor, with reasonable power in a small package. Never likely to win a good design award, however...

I owned one 1979 to 1993; used it mainly for
brushhogging. The transmission in general and
gearshift in particular were the weak points. The
gearshift was a major pain in the rear. As soon as
I got the money together I traded it on a good
tractor - a 2040 diesel.

I had a 2010D in 70-79 with a Kelley loader. It pulled 3x16 mounted Oliver plow, very well. I rebuilt the engine and pump and it never missed a beat. It was well known in the area, 'cause the boys from the fire department helped me bale hay and in 1979 it sold for 6100.00. My brother who worked for JD told me AFTER I bought the 2010D that it was the worst tactor JD made. But I found
nothing to suport this, and in fact I would buy another if I had the need. Dave and Mary Bowers Phx, AZ

Stay away from the 1010's and 2010's worst engine design JD built.

Check the archives..... I asked the same question 6 months ago and was amazed by the number of folks that said "stay away from ANY 2010" tractor. They sell in California for $3000 tops, and that's only when someone buys one.

Hello Steve, I like my 2010. It's a late model (1965) and NOT a diesel. Supposedly the problems with the hydraulics were straightened out by late '63. It has good power in a small package. Stay away from the early ones especially the diesel.
There are a lot of better tractors out there for that kind of money.

Hey,
I have a friend who has a 2010 with a loader. I would say the 2010 is quite possibly the worst if not one of the worst JD's made. Not a real dependable machine. My mechanic friend who is good with any tractor he touches had a 2010 in once with hyraulic problems. He took that thing apart 3 TIMES and it still didnt work. In his words, "There is no reason for it not to work, AND IT STILL DOESNT WORK!!!" A JD man who worked for Deere once said that there were good ones and bad ones. IF you got a good one you couldnt break it. If you got a bad one you couldnt keep it running!! I wouldnt recommend a 2010 to anyone. Too many motor problems and hydraulic probs. The motor used a big plate with all 4 sleves attached and its not a good design. Just my thoughts and what i have heard. Hope its a help not a hinderance,
chaz

My cousin bought a new 2010 shortly after they were introduced. He never bought another JD. He has bought 5 new tractors since then. I like and have two of the 2 cylinder JD.

I wouldn't have one especially for $4500. My neighbor has a gas model, don't know the year.He was out using it 3 years ago when something happened to the hydralics that made them burst and all of a sudden he was covered in hydraulic fluid. He torn it all down and had some trouble with certain parts that weren't made anymore. He has a the 2010's succesor, the 2020 Diesel with a loader which is 5 times the tractor. Also his model 47# loader on the 2020 will not fit the 2010.

I have probably loaded 200 6-12 yard dump trucks with my 2010 industrial loader since I bought it last winter, it had been used and abused when I got it but other than a few stops to tighten front wheels, loaders are hard on front ends, and in my case lots of oil, it has worked seemlessly, I have it down now for some much needed TLC and upgrades, but nothing I wouldn't expect from any tractor that had worked as hard for the last year.
