Frank, use this diagram for your magneto equipped B. You will have to remove the wires from the "L" & "BAT" terminals on the existing regulator & then hook to the big "BAT" terminal on the back of the alternator (note: you might have to lengthen them). You will have to add a switch at the dash area & a wire with a resistor to turn the power on & off to the regulator #1 terminal in the alternator (this is necessary because the mag equipped B doesn't have an ignition switch that applies power anywhere) "Note: if you want automatic charging you can replace the off/on switch with an oil pressure controlled 2 terminal n/o pressure switch in a T that attaches to the block where the oil pressure line attaches now". You will also have to run a jumper from the #2 terminal of the alternator to the big "BAT" terminal on the back of the alternator. The alternator will work without the resistor in the wire to the #1 terminal but the internal components life will be shorter without it.

Frank, use this diagram as a start. Remove the wire going to the BAT terminal on the old regulator & lengthen it & hook it to the big BAT terminal on the alternator. You will also have to remove the black wire going to the "L" terminal on the old regulator & lenghten it & hook it to the BAT terminal of the alternator or you won't have lights (note: disreguard the light wire running from the ammeter to the light S/W on this diagram as it is for a different tractor. You will have to run a new wire from the ignition S/W (put the diode & resistor in this wire) to the #1 terminal of the alternator. The diode & resistor can be bought from "radio shack" or an electronics store. The ballast resistor can be bought from an auto parts store. Study this diagram & E-Mail me or John T with questions & either John T or I will reply. If you aren't sure about anything just ask.

Frank, I got a little ahead of myself & assumed you had a distributor. Disreguard the ballast resistor & coil wiring, If your ignition switch has only a mag ground terminal then you will have to add a toggle switch from one leg of the ammeter to the #1 terminal of the alternator & use just the resistor (you won't need the diode) then you will have to turn the switch on when the tractor is running & turn it off when you shut it off. (or you can install an oil pressure controlled switch like on a diesel) If this is too much to understand let me know & I will draw up a wire diagram to work on your mag equipted B & remove all the un-needed extra wiring.

Clooney, I'm glad you put this on because I can use it on my '48 Case SC. Sorry It's not green, but I read this board because some of you guys have info useful to other brands as well. Thanks for the help.

Frank, clooney guy has a good picture diagram about the alternator once you let him know what model it is. In the meantime, since it has a magneto, there's not much else left to do to change it to 12 volt. Install the new 12 v battery (neg grnd for the alternator as opposed to the factory pos grnd). If it has an ammeter, you would have to reverse its leads so it dont indicate backwards. Change any lights over to 12 volts. Starter will work as is. John T

Frank, what model J.D. do you have & what Delco alternator do you have? If you don't know then which way do the little terminals face -- or || ? Are the terminals on the back facing the same direction as the big terminal or are they on top (facing in a different direction than the big terminal)? Let us know so we can help.
