I have a 8760 with 619 engine. Several years ago with about 3750 hr. the head gasket leaked compression into cooling system. We had the gasket replaced by JD techs at Beatrice, Ne. Yesterday, while applying NH/3, it started pushing water out of the overflow tank. I could see lots of air in bubbles in the coolant. Have 5300 hrs on engine now. Is this a common problem on 619 engines? How do we correct this problem? Thanks for any help you can give.

No, it's not normal for any engine to leak compression into the cooling system. Don has the right idea - everything needs to be checked thoroughly - head and cylinder deck flatness, liner protrusion and so forth. You could have a low liner not sealing correctly to the head. And yes, the head bolts should be replaced every time the head is off, and the proper torque and sequence used. I'll be in the Beatrice area next weekend, so if you want me to look at it, I'd be willing to stop by and check it. You can drop me an email if you want. I don't know any of the techs at Beatrice, but they've done work for my grandpa and uncle, who farm in that area, and seem to do a good job.

Thanks for the reply. The tech from Beatrice works at Marysville, Ks. now and is very good. I just wanted a second opinion as to what my problem may be. I had him start on it this afternoon and will have him double check the block and liners. He surfaced the head and check for cracks last time, but will do so again. He mentioned we may have a problem with the block being truly flat this morning when we brought the tractor in. I'm not sure what the solution is if the block is not truly flat! Thanks again G-MAN, wish me luck as I don't need anymore deductions in a dry year like this. Hope to see you again at the Outpost.

I don't know if I can show my face down there again, after the beating we got from the Wildcats, lol. Actually, I'll probably be there Saturday night. I think I heard that Brett is having karaoke, so I'll try to make it. My cousin is also having his fish fry that night, so I might not make it until later. I think the technician you're referring to is the guy that's done most of the work for Grandpa and Todd. They say he's pretty good.

I've seen 5 or 6 8650's with head gasket problems. Usually comes from having injection pump cranked up too high, & the 30 40 & 50 series used the engine block as part of the structural support of the tractor.

when you do the head gasket , have the head planed, checked for cracks, and use new head bolts and the new torque procedures. Don
