I have a 1951 JD A with the six speed transmission. This tractor was very seldom used in its life when I got it. All of the gears seem to work good, but when the tractor is OUT OF GEAR and idling with the clutch engaged, every now and then it will grind and want to jump foward as if its trying to go into a gear. Are the shifters out of adjustment, or do I have other problems. Any info will help

Todd---there is one other thing that could be possibly causing your problem, and that is that the roller bearings inside the idler gear are worn out and tend to pile up instead of roll. This could cause the idler gear to bind on the shaft and cause it to jerk. Can't think of anything else at the minute.

Todd, I am into a 48 B with a similar problem. It would sometimes surge while in neutral, occasionaly after moving the selector out of 4th into the neutral position, then letting the clutch in, it would still be in 4th gear. Pulled off the transmission top cover and discovered the sliding gear shaft bearing on the right of the shaft had completely failed. This allows the gears on the sliding shaft to drop down enough at least on the right side of the shaft to contact the ilder gear. You may want to take a look.....

I have a '52 "A" that I just completely overhauled the transmission (new gears and all new bearings) and the way I remember it, I can't see anything that would cause the problem, other than shifter alignment, or perhaps a bent shifter fork.

Man I tell ya your whole tractors bad. You need to tell me where you live so I can come buy the thing off of you... real cheap ofcourse. I'm just kidding Todd, you happen to own one of my dream tractors{that is a late model A} and I hope someday to find one to own myself. I'm sorry though I haven't had the pleasure of tearing into a 2 lunger yet, but someday I hope to. Good Luck, Greg H.
