Greg, No offense but the 4040 was like the gentleman mentioned below the same basic tractor (including the 404 engine) as the 4230, just weaned back on the horsepower. The engine is the same cube as your 4020 but not the same engine some parts of it are the same depending on how old your 4020 diesel is?? The 4030 did have a smaller engine in it as I own one of them as well. It is a 329 Dubuque engine. The 4030 had a lighter drive train like the 3020 it replaced. The 4040 had the same heft drive train as the 4020, 4230, 4320 and 4430. Tractors that used the many different 404 John Deere engines were 4010 (with larger replacement sleeves and pistons) 4020, 4320, 4520, 4620, 7020, 4230, 4430, 4630, and the 4040. The 4040 was the last John Deere Ag tractor to have the 404 engine it. The 4240 and larger and newer row crop tractors used the 466 engine. After that we can talk about 7.6, 8.1, 531, 619, 10.1, 10.5 and 12.5s Not to confuse anybody just clarify some things. Dave W.
