Any experts on this planter? Last year I discovered I had some "skips" on one of the units. Any ideas? I figure I will take the gears (at each unit) that are driven by the square shaft off and check them out, but thought I would see if anyone else had this problem, and could steer me in the right direction.
Thanks for any help

GreenGuy, you didn't mention it, but are your skips just randomly spaced within each row, or does the whole planter skip? If this is the case, you will want to check the clutch on it. It could be that it is worn and jumps out when under load during planting. Something to check. Hope this helps. Mike

If your planter is a plate type, here are my suggestions. Check that the cast iron floor plate on the bottom of the cannister doesn't have a groove worn in it. If it does, it must be replaced as the extra space will cause seed to bunch up and jam, causing skips and bunches. Also, it is important to replace the knocker kit in the unit on a regular basis. This an inexpensive little kit available from Deere. This mechanism ejects the seed from the plate cell into the seed tube. Sprinkling a teaspoon of powdered graphite over top of each fillup of seed will prevent most problems. Check the fit of your seed in the plate cells. Seed Corn manufacturers plate reccomendations aren't all that accurate.

I may be able to help you. I used a 1240 for years and a matter of fact still have it in the back of the shed. The 1200 units have two seperate sides. One for corn and one for soybeans, sorgrum and the like. I assume your'e refering to skips in corn. Pull the cover off the side of the corn units to expose the finger wheel.Check for weak or broken springs. Rotate unit and observe that all fingers are working properly. But more than likely there is a ruff or rusty spot on the crome plate under the fingers. If there is a spot it will cause the seed to jump out from under the finger.
