Thanks to JD70Jim, Clooney and Deano for your advice. I loosened the oil pressure line from behind the governer and cranked the engine. The oil gave a good initial squirt and then stopped running. I stopped cranking. I cranked again with the same result. I would think that the pump is operating but there is a blockage in the system somewhere. Does this sound about right?
I'm gonna try a new oil filter next. Can the suction screen be cleaned without pulling the oil pump? I was thinking that I might be able to do this from the crankcase cover. If this isn't the way to do it please let me know. If i have to pull the pump i think I would have to remove the discharge line and then drop the pump. Is the R&R of the pump a two person operation?

My 48 A was doing that, the pump screen was mostly clogged. The screen can be removed and cleaned from the top as I remember? I did not have to remove the pump anyway, it's been a couple of years. Drain the crankcase, open the top and check it out.

sounds like you might have trouble in your vale above your oil filter, its a pain to get to, you might check to see if your shaft is slipping too, take off your cover and watch it while you crank it over.
