Hi, I have an old A that is all-fuel so the compression is lower. I want to increase the power but I don't know the best way to do it without hurting the tractor. Should I shave the head or get aluminum pistons to raise compression? Also is there any way to lower the gear ratio a hair, I have the hi/lo transmission and it is FAST! I will be pulling it some, so I am going to add a K&N air filter for that. Still using my A for farming too, I just want to have a good combo. How do you make a kill switch for a tractor that doesn't have a starting switch, just a foot pedal directly on starter?

Luke,

I recently found out that you can change the gear on the clutch/pulley and the first reduction gear with a pair off of a late A. This will slow the tractor down a bit. The aluminum pistons will raise your compression up to around 6.5:1 or around 130-150 psi. I have a friend that shaved .275" off of his head but I wouldn't recommend it for you. I would clean up the valves and valve seats and maybe shave enough to flatten the head. I would suggest a gas manifold, also. If you go that far I wouldn't stop until I added an electronic ignition for better spark control. email me if you have any questions.

good suggestions burns. i think to slow down you could also get shorter tires but would not recomment it.gas manifold with alum pistons is what i would do. this can also be done on a budget. i would take a die grinder and clean out the ports on the head as far as possible.
my .02
i have a set of used .045 over cast pistons for sale for 100 plus shipping. you would need rings.
but i would still recommend alum.

you can just rebuild your carb or call roberts carb repair...i believe they are making a "big nut" A carb. burns is right, be careful if you port your head. i fell through once in a bubble in the cast and had to start over with a different head. you can make your own manifold too. that is what we did. we used two inch I.D. boiler pipe. you will have smooth interior walls with a consistant two inch ID. the air cleaner alone would be a big improvement. i would also build up the cam and get it true. factory ones are not all that great. you will see way better performance if you cam it since you are going through this hassle.

I am not an expert on what is actually different with the carbs. I would run your carb after it is cleaned up and rebuilt. Becareful with opening your ports with a die grinder. The transition from the manifold to head should be without any type of interference. I would recommend finding a machine shop that can run an endmill down through the entire length of the intake passage in the head. I have an aftermarket manifold for my G and it has a larger intake port than what was stock in the head. I had the intake passage in the head opened up to match the manifold. If you are not careful you can create another venturi in the head. This is bad because you want and need a smooth transition of air to the intake valves.
