Battery suggestions

I pulled a good one yesterday. In working on getting my 3020 (12 volt starter) ready for paint, I dropped one of the batteries and broke the case. It was a Crown I've had for 2 years. The other battery is more of a "no name"--I think it says Commercial--and is 4 years old. Should I replace both batteries? Any ideas on brands? I've had the starter rebuilt and the cables and ground look good, but it still turns over fairly slow--I haven't worried about it too much since it always starts. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,

It's important that the batteries be matched, especially if they are in parallel. Not only do you want the same brand and size, but you might want to ensure that they are operationally matched as well. I do this when buying new batteries for my diesel trucks and tractors.

I sort through several batteries on the shelf with a digital voltmeter, looking for ones that are within +/- .1 volt of each other. Then, I take a load tester and load down the battery for 10 seconds - while reading the voltage. I want two batteries that load down to as close to the same voltage, after being close to each other right off the shelf.

If the batteries are not matched, then the better performing battery will wind up handling more than 2/3 of the load. Plus, the weaker battery will wind up taking more of the charging current than the good one. This will lead to the premature failure of the 'good' battery. I've seen this occur in as little as two years when parallel batteries were not matched.

I find that I can get at least 25% longer service life out of a pair of batteries if I take the few extra minutes to obtain matched ones.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the help! Actually I have two twelve volt batteries hooked up parallel. The cables look good, but I suppose they could be deteriorated inside the insulation. Any preferences on brands of batteries?

John, I have a 3010D that is a hard start. I put 2 Interstate batteries in it and was impressed with the difference. They cost a bit more, but you get what you pay for.

I assume you're talking about two 6-volt batteries used in series on your tractor. I have a 4020 with the same set-up.

I wouldn't worry too much about having the two exactly alike (age, make, etc.). In series, the same current will pass through the two during both charging and cranking. The voltages are additive. If they were two 12-volt units set up in parallel, the situation would be different. Then they would need to be about the same.

G Taylor it's better if both batterys are the same

Series or parallel connections the system will work better if both batterys have the same current capacity, voltage & internal resistance. In a modest demand system one can often get away with some odd combos but overall life, reliability & capacity will be limited. Don't let someone tell you otherwise.

In order to properly charge & supply current the batteries have to equal in all repects. That means the same make, model, production lot,age & load. By the way flourescent lamps need be replaced in matched pairs as well.Sortened lamp & ballast life will result.

Replace both of them if funds allow it. They both will laster longer and also its easier on the starter too. :-)
