Will a 4 cylinder Splitdorf mag cap from a 246C or 246T or work in place of a 2 post deere mag cap on a D? The splitdorf mags used on other tractors are the same except for the cam that drives the points, the back cover and the 4 wire caps. What would happen if the bottom 2 post weren't hooked up?

Jeff,
I believe 246C,T used on 2 cylinder tractors came with just two posts. The 46 was used on IHC's and had a 4 post cap. The 4 post cap should work fine, just tie the bottom two posts to ground. However, there was switching around, so it is not unusual to find a 46 converted to a 246, and vice versa. As you point out, not much had to be changed, just the cap, cam, and impulse unit from CW to CCW (or vise versa).
