I'm getting nothing when I step on the starter button, the battery checks out fine. Is it necessary to remove the flywheel to get to the starter? HELP! Season is closing in!!

Thanks to all who gave me advise on my 50. The one response that did the trick was Zeb's. I followed your instructions and nothing happened. But it got me to a point where I knew what needed to be done and am happy to report I got the starter back today with new contacts, brushes and a happy 50. Thank you for your help, now I can go out and get dirty!!

Jim, you can remove the cover plate from under the tractor to get to the starter. Hopefully it's just some corrosion on the electric cable that can be cleaned from underneath. If you have to remove the starter you'll first have to remove the flywheel cover to get to the three bolts that hold the starter in place. Once my 50 wouldn't start - after taking the flywheel cover off I found that the bronze bushing in the end of the starter had somehow came out. It was laying in the bottom of the cover all bent up. I got a new bushing and tapped it in the end of the stater and now it works fine again. Good luck!

Jim, My 50 does that after sitting for long periods. Remove the inspection cover under the tractor. It has 6 bolts that holds it on. After you unhook the battery cable from the battery, take the cable off the starter switch. Take the two screws out that hold the button off and remove the button. It probably has corrosion on the two contacts on the inside. Take some contact cleaner and clean the inside terminals and it should crank. A small amount of dielectric compound on the terminals will help eliminate the problem. Hope this helps, Zeb

There is a cover under the tractor six bolts and you can get to the starter switch depress it with a screwdriver and see if it is a linkage problem.

No, but you can get to the starter and switch from underneath, can't you?
If I remember right you have to take off the flywheel cover and the bolts (especially the top one) are REALLY fun, but I've never had my flywheel off.
