110 Starter Won't Turn Over

I posted this message in Garden Tractors, too.

I'm a new owner of a 1965 JD 110. It was shipped to me about a week ago without a battery. I put a battery on it and the starter would not turn the engine over, which I attributed to the battery sitting on the shelf for who knows how long. So, I jumped off the 110 with the battery on my truck and it started right up. I did this several times with no problems.

I then hooked my battery charger up the 110 battery and left it over night. I did not unhook the battery cables from the battery while charging. Since I charged the battery, I cannot get the starter to turn the engine over, not even when I try to jump off the 110 with the truck. I turn the key on and the generator light comes on real bright, but the starter won't do a single thing. Nothing.

Any suggestions? Did I burn something up with my charger?

JC,
I would isolate each component of your starting system ( fuses, starter, battery, ignition switch, and the wiring). It sounds to me that you may have burned up the starter by jumping with a car battery. But then again the 110 is 36 years old and something was bound to go bad. I'm an electrician and have worked on plenty of JD starters. Just remember to check the easiest to remedy causes first (fuse) and isolate each piece when checking. All the best and don't hesitate to ask for any tech advise.
