I bought a 1947 JD A 5 years ago and it has been running well (Serial # 564840). It came with a 12v battery and lights that did not work. The 12v battery surprised me, but the tractor ran well and the battery stayed charged. I finally got around to working on the lights and found they used a GE1183 bulb, which the JD dealer said was a 6v bulb. I checked the Generator, but could find nothing indicating whether it was for 6v or 12v. I even took it to the JD dealer and he couldn't tell either. I rewired the lights, replaced the switch but they still won't work. The fuse between the Amp meter and switch is fine. Could someone straighten out my confusion. Should the tractor have a 6v or 12v battery? If 12v, then does the light switch reduce the feed to the lights to 6v? How can I test the light components independent of the tractor? Any help would be appreciated.

What I'd do Joe, is connect a jumper to the ungrounded side of the battery, then touch the other end to points 20 on each of the lights. If all is well (including 12V bulbs) the light should light. Like John T says, a bad ground in the light assembly could be the problem. If the light doesn't work, open up the light assembly and clean and inspect it, making sure the internal ground wire is intact. Good luck!

So many questions lol. Ok, if it has a 12 volt battery and its been stayign charged fine as you say, it must have an okay 12 volt generator/regulator or it would have been running down on you. The only thing u gotta do is trace down for 12 volts at the ammeters load side, then 12 volts through the fuse, then through a good switch to the good lights to ground. (simple series circuit between - on batttery, thru ammeter and fuse and switch to lights and ground which is battery +) It often happens that the lights arent grounded properly which is why they dont work. If a test lamp shows 12 volts through the on switch to them and the lamps are good but wont lite, probably a bad ground I say. There are voltage droppin resistors on some light switches to make them work in the dim mode you know (12 volts at high and 9 or so on low) but Im not sure what you have. Regardless, the fuse and switch must supply voltage and current to good grounded lights. It was + grnd from factory but dont know what u have now, its whatever batt terminal is tied to frame, thats what grnd it is. Good Luck Ol John T
