I have a 1958 JD 420T. Could anyone tell me what grade of oil to use in this tractor? I don't have manual and have no idea. Thanks.

First...I would very strongly encourage you to buy at least an operator's manual for your fine piece of machinery. The information in there will increase the useful life and your enjoyment of your tractor. They aren't expensive if you'll call Deere at 1-800-522-7448 (sorry Kim). They'll ask the serial number so they can send the correct manual.

To answer your question, the general consensus here seems to be straight 30W non-detergent oil in the crankcase, but the manual recommends 5W-20 in winter and 10W-30 in summer.

Non detergent oil belongs on museum display shelves only. The detergent keeps foreign material in suspension so the filter may remove it. Non detergent oil was used in the old days because there was nothing better avalable, the engine didn't have a filtration system or it burned/leaked the oil before it became dirty. The "detergent oil wrecked my engine" stories are cover stories for usually new owners with blown engines. Usually after some old engine on it's last legs anyways was pushed long & hard "trying her out".
