If this engine was rebuilt and special attention
was not paid to the valve protrusion height they will start hard but run good once you get them
going.

Slow cranking speed, low cetane fuel, worn/plugged injectors, low injection pressure, low compression due to worn valves caused by loose guides or stuck, worn, broken rings & excessive cylinder wall clearance. Detonation from even one ether start can score metal by disolving lube oil off cylinder walls. Or breaking rings/ piston ring lands. Quick starts are tempting but ether should only be used on your worst enemy's equipment.

Our 4010 will not start, even at 90 degrees, without a very small shot. Just turns over and smokes white(billows). Once going, it runs fine. We put in a JD overhaul kit years ago. I've been told that pistons are availble that have the top ring closer for more compression for starting. It uses no oil, and has plenty of power, so we put up with the starting. It does start better when plugged in, even when it's hot outside. Once started in the morning, it starts OK.
