I have been tinkering with my '35 John Deere B(serial# 3669). I thawed the engine up with gallons of kerosene two summers ago when I visited the farm. I ran the tractor acouple of weeks ago and decided it would need some actual work. I'm fifteen and have never done any overhaul work. I would like to find out how much I would have to fork out on honning, reseating the vavles, any bearings, rings, etc. It runs but not as well as it should. I also has sleeves in it. I do want to do alot of the work myself and not pay someone else to have my fun. Thanks for any help.

it would have been a good idea to check the condition of the engine before you ran it. I was about to start my B, but decided to check out the meat(engine). 2 valves were stuck and 1 cylinder had a pound or two of mud in it, other than that, it was in good condition. good luck on your restoration project. if your in ny, i got a valve seat and face grinder.

I am overhauling my JD H right now. I know you have a B but if you hone the cylinders you can pick up a hone for about 25 bucks. I am having my valves reseated as well and I am putting new rod bearings in while I am at it. You will probably want to get the head checked and plained while you have it off.

John, the price of engine parts & bearings has been going up every year. It's almost impossible to estimate the cost until you get into it & see what is actually wrong. Once you open it up & start spending money it is hard to turn back. You could easily have over $500.00 in just the transmission bearings, gaskets & seals. The engine could go even higher if it needs new pistons or crankshaft work. About all you can do is take it apart & see what will be needed then make a decision on whether to proceed or not.
