I have a 1958 JD 420T. In the process of overhauling my tractor I noticed a small hairline crack in the #1 cylinder wall. I was told (from this message board) that I should either find another block or sleeve the cylinders. I would like to salvage the block and sleeve the cylinders if possible, but I am unsure of how this is done. The engine has been rebuilt before, at least once, as I removed .040 oversize pistons from the block. I was thinking they would have to seal the crack in some way, then bore the cylinders out and press the sleeves in. Then I would probably have to go back to standard size pistons. I would like to understand a little bit more about this before I go speak with someone about doing this work. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can get it back to factory specs with new sleeves. The crack is not a problem, they will bore out what they need and press the new sleeves in. Take them your pistons if you want and they will get the sleeves to fit the pistons. I do it all the time. Good luck
