I just purchased a john deer 1952 model A and I am experiencing some fuel starvation problems. I noticed that there is no manuel fuel shut off valve, and that one of the previous owners has rigged a little metal strap across the top of the glass sediment bowl to hold down a little valve of some sort. I then also noticed the fuel problem after i touched the metal strap, now the valve isn't staying down. Could this be my problem? If so how could i fix it the right way. Thanks Ron Sharpe

Ron, it sounds like you have the oil pressure operated automatic fuel shut off offered for the late A. It is supposed to work with engine oil pressure operating a diaphragm to open that little valve you see. For some reason the oil pressure isn't opening it & someone has rigged a strap to keep it open. If you have an oil line running to it & it has oil pressure then it probably needs new diaphragms (2) used. You can either repair that auto shut-off (parts are still available for it) or just replace it with a manual shut-off.
