I have found a 316 that I may purchase. The hydrostatic transmission is controlled by a lever on the right side of the instrument panel. While test driving the tractor I would push the lever forward to go faster. Upon releasing the lever the tractor would immediately slow (as the control lever returned toward "neutral"). The person selling the tractor said that this was normal. If correct, does this mean I must, at all times, steer with my left hand while controlling ground speed with my right? This doesn't seem right.

I have a JD 140, 317, and 322 ... all 3 are hydrostats, the 317 and 322 levers are on the dash, just like the 316. When I move the lever to a given position, it stays there, except when I am creeping along, very close to neutral, as when tilling. Then the lever will find it's way to nuetral. I believe there is a tension adjustment on the lever that will stiffen it up for you. Gadget

I have a 420 model with the lever on the RT. side of the panel, It will stay in one place--.But your speed is always changing because of hills, so you will drive one handed most of the time.
My machine has a front blade and you have to steer with your knees to do close work. The later models are foot controled.

Thanks Magoo.

I think you answered my real question when you said that the lever "will stay in one place." The lever on the 316 I am looking at would not stay in one place. It slowly returned toward neutral . . . as though spring loaded. So, to move forward at all I had to physically hold the lever in place. This did not seem right. I understand and can deal with the ground speed changes occasioned by hills.
