I recently purchased this A from a friend who, half -way restored it, when I got it started It didn't have any oil pressure. the oil pump drive coupling had split. I only ran it a minute but I don't know how long it had been run like this before, so I started checking the bearings. According to the shop manual the one piece main bearings in the later John Deere A is interchangeable with the earlier two piece adjustable main bearings. Is this true , and is there any advantage to putting the new style in , and how do you check the crank to bearing clearance with the one piece bearing? And how do I find new ones? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would fix the coupling, then start it again and check the oil pressure. See if the pressure reamins stable and does not drop. Don't panic and start replacing parts for nothing. I have seen people tie up a mint in these tractors changing out everything just so they can say they did. The 2 cylinder deeres are tough and have held up over the years. Just get the tractor running again and then check things out.
