40-420 Manifold/Muffler Question

I have a 1958 JD 420T. I am about to replace the manifold and muffler on my tractor, which are rusted completely. The manifold is the same manifold that goes on a JD 40. The only muffler that I can find for a 420 is the oval kind, which means I will also need to find an exhaust pipe with the mounting flange to connect it to the manifold. I have found a muffler for a JD 40 with a mounting flange on it that looks identical to the standard muffler for the JD 420. Can I use the muffler made for the 40? Will there be any problems with the hole in the cowling not being big enough? What about exhaust gas restriction, would that be a problem? Thanks.

From the factory the 420/430/440gas used a different head, ports & intake/exhaust manifold than the 40. A 420 manifold will bolt onto the 40 head but the ports will be partly mis-matched. An oval 430 muffler will help preserve the operators hearing.

The 40 thru 420 all used the same muffler, with
one exception,your tractor.The 1958 420's used
the same muffler as the 430,which was a short
round muffler with the extension pipe. The old
style won't work on your tractor unless you
make the hood hole larger.Any tractor supply
store,Farm& fleet,TSc,Farm&country, etc can
get you a muffler and pipe,or you can get a
more expensive one from JD.

Becareful of the muffler which you replace your oid one with. Some of the 420's used an adapter from the manifold to the muffler. I have a 420 which kept getting water in the oil pan, even with the exhaust covered. I had the head and block checked. No cracks. What I later found out that the muffler that was on the tractor , was for a 420 but had a smaller inlet than the other 420 muffler. When I ordered the adapter and found a Stanley muffler with the correct inlet, I do not have rain water getting into the engine. The adapter # is AT 10523 T and the muffler that fits that adapter is AT 3246 T. ( Oval Muffler. For the round , the adapter # is the same and the muffler # is AT 10646 T. There is about a 1/16" diameter on the maniflods to the muffler's. If you have the adapter you will need to use these mufflers. Even though AM 3101 T muffler seems to fit make sure.
