Make sure you have a 4 terminal regulator on the tractor. I have a B that did the same thing. They were supposed to have the lights feed (White wire I think) come from the regulator via a 4th post. Many were replaced with cheaper three terminal regulators & the light wire was just put on the BAT terminal. It worked but you had to run full throttle to keep the lights from discharging the battery. The 4 terminal regulator in essence puts the generator into hi gear when current for the lights is drawn through the regulator. Works right well almost down to dead slow idle.

When you pull the switch to turn the lights on, your amp gauge is going to show a negative charge, especially if you are at slow idle, even at a fast idle with the generator setup it will show some discharge, then slowly start to go back to 0 or charge side. Thats just the way the old systems work. You can go the way that most people do if they are not strictly show tractors, and put on an single wire alternator, that way you would not need a switch to turn your alt off and on. Anyhow I hope this helps, good luck

Hi, Joe. You need to order A service manual from John Deere, order "SM-2000 Tractors and Engines General" . This manual is just Loaded with all kinds of information on Starters, Generators,Mags, and coils , Carbs. And so much more. I just got mine. It costed about $35.00 But when you get your you will be glad you spent the money!. I purchased the service, parts, and operator manuals for my mod {A} and I tell you these manuals are a MUST HAVE!!!.

Where can I find a "SM-2000 Tractors and Engines general" manual. I looked under John Deere manuals. Also looked under YT manuals. for a 1951 John Deere A. for service manuals that would tell about electrial wiring.
