Hey Guys, The oil strainer screen on my D is all in pieces. What should I replace it with, and how should I attach it to the strainer body. I tried to solder the old one and now I have solder drips inside. I know that this won't be good. Also, Who would you go to for a set of gaskets for the whole tractor,Or should I start making them as I go. JD Dealer has been no help. Ser # 121646.
Thanks Marty

Marty, if you are referring to the suction strainer in the bottom of the crankcase, I'd replace it with brass hardware cloth. Find a mesh that pretty well matches the old screen. The reason for brass is that it won't rust out from moisture in the crankcase. I would cut the screen about 3/8" oversize and use epoxy adhesive (my personal favorite is JB Weld) around the entire outside edge. Good epoxy is not bothered by engine oils. Besides, when the engine is running, suction from the pump will hold the screen in place. I was fortunate on my '30 model D in that the screen was cruddy but intact.

Good luck on the gaskets. I went to my local Deere dealer and was only able to get 2 out of the 7 I needed to get the pump and aux. filter back together. I made the rest with a sheet of gasket material and a ball-peen hammer. So far so good.
