I need to borrow or rent a compression tester for a 730 diesel. I put mine on a dyno Saturday and was totally disgusted by what I got. All it would do was 39 horsepower. As you might guess, I was embarassed with a whole crowd standing there watching as this big 730 diesel wouldn't even come close to what the two G's did prior to that. If you know where I can borrow or rent or even purchase one if the price isn't too high, let me know. I will gladly pay postage to and from if needed. I am going to start as the book says and check the whole system to see where the problem lies. Thanks

Before you tear it apart so far that you can check compression, you might check the timing on each injector pump. If a push rod lock nut was loose, one cyl can end up highly retarded. They'll sound like they're only running on one at idle & be low on power. It's an easy job.

Thanks, I have been studying the book and that is one of the checks I intend to make. I have also talked to an injection service about rebuilding and calibrating the pump and injectors in case I need to go that far.

Good luck. Stick with it. They're really nice machines once you get the bugs worked out.

Just a thought... I ran a dyno on my 730 after I rebuilt it and it was showing short too. Turns out that my live PTO was slipping and I couldn't get all of the power to the shaft. Just My two bits.

I thought there may be some slippage too but he lugged it right down to about 850 rpm before he left it go and did this twice. That should have eliminated the slippage possibility wouldn't you think? The tractor doesn't even sound right to me. It sounds like it is missing on one cylinder or not getting enough fuel maybe and it does not pull right. My old R will run away from this thing and that shouldn't happen.

When I needed to check compression on my 820 I borrowed the tester from my John Deere dealer. They still had the equipment from the two cylinder days. I may have had an advantage in that I farm with John deere equipment and know all the guys in the shop.
