well,

now that I've taken the con-rod caps off, I see that the con-rod bearings are pitted and galled and need to be replaced. Only problem is, they're cast into the caps and rods!

Is there any way to repair these, or do people generally replace the con-rods and caps with the newer-style rods and caps with the precision bearing insers? Looks like the crank journals are scored too, so the crank's going to need to be machined. I'm starting to think that I can't win! Every time I take another part off this machine, another $500 flies out of my pocket! :)

Caps and crank can look bad and notbe as bad as they look. What you need is a set of mikes to check dims.Should have .001 per 1 inch diameter

good luck

Actually,

Each of the con-rod cap bearings are worm bad enough that there is a dime-size area of the bearing that I can see right through to the steel of the cap itself. I think these things are worn unacceptably badly.
