I have inherited a 2010 gas and don't know much about tractors...but want to learn....the generator light stays on when I run the tractor and the battery isn't staying charged. How do I troubleshoot this? How do I determine if the generator is bad or the regulator is bad? How do I test the output of the generator? Where is the voltage regulator? Any help is appreciated.

Lisa, this is easy if there but alot to try and tell u on the net but heres my best shot. I first be sure the belt is tight and the Generator and Voltage Regulator are well grounded. Then I jump the Field Termonal off the Gen or VR to ground, and if she gens, and if so its the VR (or its not well grounded) and not the generator. Also to see if its VR or Generator, when its runnuign connect the Bat terminal on the VR (lil black box usally on the Generator) to the Arm or Gen termimal and if she gens then, its again the VR. The most common prob I found in generaots could be cured by removing the band that covers the brush springs and cleaning and freeing up the brush hold down springs and a dirty commutator. Other common problenms are theres not a good connection out of the VR all the way to the battery (ofen at starter terminal) because even if teh gen is genning, its gotta be connected to the battery to charge it. Good luck Ol John T Engineer in Indiana

Hello Lisa We used to own a 2010 gas. My dad traded it when the transmission messed up. Wish I still had it. Usually if you cross between the two posts on the generator with a screwdriver you will see sparks if it is charging. I`am not sure about this, but if you touch the field post to ground and the regulator is bad, this will cause the generator to charge. I am a farmer and usually take the generator or alternator to my local repair shop. He will test run it and if no problem, no charge. I think the voltage regulator is under the dash but am not sure. Hopefully someone with more expertice will answer.
