I have a 1963 jd 3010 gas that started to have a knock in the engine. It sounds like it is up higher on the engine and not low [oil pan/crankshaft area]. When I pull the spark plug wire off the cylinder at the front of the engine, the knock all but stops. So I parked this tractor. What does this sound like? Could it be a wrist pin? What should I look for and be careful of when I drop the oil pan and remove the head? The tractor has never smoked or burned oil, but didn't seem to have the power it should have. Should I have the valves done and replace the rings while I have it apart, and rod bearings. Where is a good place to get these parts and a gasket set? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated-thanks.

One thing you need to eliminate is the hydraulic pump connection to the front of the crankshaft. There is an aluminum clamp which has rubber bushings. If one or more of these bushings wears out, the engine will clatter and make a knocking sound under varying loads. Just my 2 cents worth. These bushings and clamp need to be checked periodically anyway, as you dont want them coming apart and flying through your radiator. Good luck

this could be a scored piston... my 3020 pulled this stunt. I also sucked a loose screw from the carb into the cylinder. I wouldn't be scared to pull the head and find out. good luck
