I posted a question a few weeks back in regard to a tractor that had lost wheel drive and PTO power after a stump/bush hog encounter I had. After investigating all of the good advice I got in this forum on determining what the problem was I have narrowed it down to the prop shaft. I am a little intimidated about doing my first tractor split so I was looking for any lessons learned or any advice that could be given. Thanks again for all the troubleshooting help last week.

Its not a bad job, just be careful with the jackstands. The hardest part probalby will be the Hyd. lines. Drain the system form the small plugs on the back right above the top link mount. If possible use a foor jack or something that will roll so you can move the tractor apart. BE CAREFUL WITH THE FRONT END, IT WILL FALL TO ONE SIDE. Use wooden blocks to lock it in place(Wide front). The propeller shaft should have a lock pen to hold it on to the input shaft.

My input shaft splines were worn pretty bad, I took my welder and build them back up. It took a while with a small air grinder but it worked. I found a used propeller shaft in good condition.
Let me know how it goes.

Thanks. I had not even thought about the front end wanting to tip over to one side. My tractor does have the wide front end. Can the prop shaft be removed without spliting the tractor between the engine and the center frame? It seems like that would sure make it easier.

I.T. has a very good book - not too expensive, on cracking the M and related tractors in half. If I am not mistaken, that's what you will want to do. The service manual is very helpful. Good luck.
